Pride Without Prejudice

by: Ruby Moran

Prejudice-free pride. The pride is everywhere. Oneself, one's country, and one's work are all examples of how such feelings can develop. Pride is an emotion that is deeply rooted in the sense of achievement and admiration. Pride can shine upon us like the rays of the summer sun or those very rays can burn us.

Sometimes pride is at the expense of others. Many flags now carry immensely negative connotations due to their violent histories due to aggressively nationalistic leadership. Pride in one's accomplishments sometimes comes at the expense of those who could not accomplish the same. In some cases, students put their peers down for not having the same skill level in a particular subject or brag about their test scores. Pride at the expense of others is no virtue at all.

There is no shame to be proud of one's work, appearance, or background but it shouldn't degrade other's work, especially their background. As individuals, how can we find an efficient way to be proud of our work while not stifling others' work?
