Hebe in Vegas

by: Willow Kang

Juliette, she treads

on the glow sticks of the skyscraper,

Hebe’s moon shining on her bare stilettos

precariously waltzing on the rooftop of Las Vegas

twirling with dear Leonard

Leonard is telling Juliette war gossip;

that time he stayed in Aitape’s London Tower,

leaving as a ghost & Vegas is telling stories too

whispering promises of immortality into the fountains,

a jackpot Leonard severed heads for and lost

Notes for the editor and reader: Leonard Siffleet was a young Allied soldier who fought in World War 2 as an Australian Special Forces soldier. His post was in Aitape, New Guinea, where he was captured by Japanese soldiers, and subsequently beheaded. Siffleet left behind a fiancé, Clarice Lane. His beheading was photographed by a Japanese soldier, and till this day, remains as one of the most shocking images taken in World War 2.
